THE MIDLAND CUP - Monday 6 MAY 2002 

The Midland Cup was the first tournament to be hosted in Nottingham involving 85 teams from throughout the Midlands. The aim was to ensure teams did will not play against a team from their local league.

Midland Cup 2002 Winners at U10 - Kegworth Imps from Derbyshire

Junior football teams from across the entire Midlands came to Nottingham for the first ever Midland Cup event.

The competition was organized by local company Junior Football Tours UK and was supported by Nottingham City Council and affiliated to the Notts F.A.

 Eighty five teams at U8, U9 and U10 age groups competed for the prestigious title of winner of the Midland Cup.

 The under 10 winners were Kegworth Imps (Derby) and Kingfisher Colts (Worcester) came runners up. The plate competition in the same age group was won by Belper Town (Derby) and Drezden Colts (Mansfield) came runners up.

 Bingham Town (Notts) were the victorious winners of the U8 competition beating Arnold (Notts). Calverton Colts won the plate competition beating Whittlesey YCC from Peterborough.

 Finally in the afternoon slot Manor United from Lincoln won theU9 section and Sandiacre Town were as runners up in a really thrilling display of passing football. Winning the Midland Cup was the third successive win for Manor, who had competed in tournaments of Saturday, Sunday and Monday and won all three! Wollaton Hall (Notts) won the plate and ASC Dayncourt came runner up.

 This competition was different to any other tournament due to the number of teams traveling from other areas.

 Teams from as far a field as Worcester, Staffordshire, Tamworth, Coventry, Birmingham, Northampton, Lincoln, Peterborough, as well as Leicester and Derby came to take part in the first ever competition involving teams from throughout the Midlands.

 All matches were seven-a-side played on twelve pitches on the Victoria Embankment and was the curtain raiser for this the Nottingham company which specialise in organising family orientated tours and tournaments. 

Football Director Kev Cooper said, “We wanted to stage a major tournament which brought teams to Nottingham from throughout the region. Now they have sampled the quality of football we can provide we hope they will come away with on tour in 2003."
